



Bulgaria is a country in Southeastern Europe, member of the European Union and NATO. It is situated in the eastern part of the Balkans and represents 22 % of its surface. Bulgaria borders with the Black sea on East, Greece and Turkey on South, Serbia and Macedonia on West, and Romania on North separated by the Danube River.
Itsnational holiday is the 3th Mars (The day of liberation of the Turkish occupation). Official holidays are also the 6th September- the day of national union, the 22th September- the Independence Day and 24th May- the day of Bulgarian education.
Bulgaria has its own base on island Livingston in Antarctica, as a consultative member of the Antarctic contract it participates in the government of the territories in south of 60 degrees southern latitude.
Bulgarian road system is 36 720 km long and the railway system 4300 km long.
Bulgaria has very interesting and unique nature. There are 3 national parks with 193 048 ha surface, 55reserves with 75 975 ha surface, 9 nature parks with 215 000 ha surface, which are situated from the Black sea to the Pirin mountain, hundred nature landmarks and protected areas. The biggest part of these areas is included in the European project for development of network of protected areas- NATURA 2000. Some of the most interesting landmarks are the 100 national touristic places.
In Bulgaria there are rare or disappeared in Europe animals like white tulle, big bustard, red ant, king eagle, butterfly- red apolon, alpine triton and many others. One of the rarest plants which you can find in Bulgaria are the black sea sands lily and the edelweiss.
In our country there are many nature landmarks like Belogradchik rocks, the area called Rojen in Rodopi Mountain, Iskar gorge, Ropotamo River, Veleka River, Trigrad gorge, Marvelous bridges, the Seven Rila’s lakes and many other lakes and caverns, famous all over the world with their unbelievable beauty. In Bulgaria there are more than 600 warm and cold mineral sources. The highest summit in the country is Musala-2925m.
